My favorite shopping find...

I found this featured in Better Homes and Gardens, and instantly fell in love! How original is this? You submit a profile picture of your child, and they turn it into this pendant. It is so vintage and beautiful! Wanna find out more? The site is here.
I will be sporting one ASAP!!

Speaking of original, how cute is this little rock star? I am not sure if my husband will let our son wear anything with fabric and sewn, but it is super cute! :) I haven't had a chance to look around this site much, but it looks adorable!

Drawing cats are the hardest part!

Here is a family card for an adorable family I met at the last show I did in Highland Park. I think its so cute when people include their pets, but always wonder if I can make them look enough like cats and dogs, and not like deformed teddy bears. I think I pulled it off this time, although if you think those are two deformed teddy bears, you better let me know.

I wanna be a {Pink} Cowgirl

Arg! I didn't realize it had been a week since my last post. Time flies when you are having fun. Or doing side projects. Or on Facebook. Or mothering a two-year-old. Or watching 24 (is he good? is he bad?) Or...fill in your blank here...

Here are a couple of new designs I have been working on...

The cowgirl is totally sassy, don't you think?
I will post MUCH sooner now...look for another one this weekend!

My work in LIGHTS...or rhinestones...

I love to meet fellow moms and small business owners. I had the opportunity to meet a new friend such as this at the show I did last week. She bought a couple of my note card packs and a couple of days later, I got a email with a rockin' idea!

And Come Together Cards Jewelry was born!
Faith Creations has amazing jewelry- she takes photos of your kids, creates the silver frame and makes it jewelry! Heather can do any design you desire! 44 Secrets to Dealing with a Recession

I heard this and found it on Tom Peter's website. I wasn't sure who he was...maybe I am out of it, but I love and wanted to share it! With so much out of control in this economy, it is a great reminder for those of us that have small businesses (and all of us!) about the things that ARE in our control.

44 “Secrets” and “Clever Strategies” For Dealing with the Recession of 2008

Tom Peters 03.26.09
I am constantly asked for “strategies/ ’secrets’ for surviving the recession.” I try to appear wise and informed-and parade original, sophisticated thoughts. But if you want to know what’s really going through my head, see the list that follows.

You come in earlier.
You leave later.
You work harder.
You may well work for less; and, if so, you adapt to the untoward circumstances with a smile-even if it kills you inside.
You volunteer to do more.
You dig deep and always bring a good attitude to work.
You fake it if your good attitude flags.
You literally practice your “game face” in the mirror in the morning, and in the loomid-morning.
You give new meaning to the idea and intensive practice of “visible management.”
You take better than usual care of yourself and encourage others to do the same-physical well-being determines mental well-being and response to stress.
You shrug off stuff that flows downhill in your direction-buy a shovel or a “pre-worn” raincoat on eBay.
You try to forget about “the good old days”- nostalgia is self-destructive.
You buck yourself up with the thought that “this too shall pass”-but then remind yourself that it might not pass any time soon, and so you re-dedicate yourself to making the absolute best of what you have now.
You work the phones and then work the phones some more-and stay in touch with positively everyone.
You frequently invent breaks from routine, including “weird” ones-”changeups” prevent wallowing and bring a fresh perspective.
You eschew all forms of personal excess.
You simplify.
You sweat the details as never before.
You sweat the details as never before.
You sweat the details as never before.
You raise to the sky and maintain at all costs the Standards of Excellence by which you unfailingly evaluate your own performance.
You are maniacal when it comes to responding to even the slightest screwup.
You find ways to be around young people and to keep young people around-they are less likely to be members of the “sky is falling” school.
You learn new tricks of your trade.
You remind yourself that this is not just something to be “gotten through”-it is the Final Exam of character.
You network like a demon.
You network inside the company-get to know more of the folks who “do the real work.”
You network outside the company-get to know more of the folks who “do the real work” in vendor-customer outfits.
You thank others by the truckload if good things happen-and take the heat yourself if bad things happen.
You behave kindly, but you don’t sugarcoat or hide the truth–humans are startlingly resilient and rumors are the real killers.
You treat small successes as if they were Superbowl victories-and celebrate and commend accordingly.
You shrug off the losses (ignoring what’s going on in your tummy), and get back on the horse and immediately try again.
You avoid negative people to the extent you can-pollution kills.
You eventually read the gloom-sprayers the riot act.
You give new meaning to the word “thoughtful.”
You don’t put limits on the flowers budget- “bright and colorful” works marvels.
You redouble, re-triple your efforts to “walk in your customer’s shoes.” (Especially if the shoes smell.)
You mind your manners-and accept others’ lack of manners in the face of their strains.
You are kind to all mankind.
You keep your shoes shined.
You leave the blame game at the office door.
You call out the congenital politicians in no uncertain terms.
You become a paragon of personal accountability.
And then you pray.

Easter Sweets

What's a holiday without food, right?

I just saw these in Country Home and thought were too cute! They have a free bird stencil for the shortbread cookie.

If I was gonna make these, I would just go to store, buy a package of cake mix and those big jelly beans and make box cupcakes. I am sure Betty Crocker is not quite the same as having "finely shredded orange peel" and sour cream, but it is much more my speed! :) But, for the gourmet chefs like my college roommate, here is the real recipe! (along with my notes).
Bird's-Nest Cupcakes
Prep: 30 minutes
Bake: 30 minutes
Cool: 5 minutes
Oven: 350°F
2 3/4 CUPS CAKE FLOUR2 TSP. BAKING POWDER1/2 TSP. BAKING SODA1/4 TSP. SALT1 8-OZ. CARTON SOUR CREAM1/4 CUP MILK2 TBSP. FROZEN ORANGE-JUICE CONCENTRATE, THAWED1 TBSP. FINELY SHREDDED LEMON PEEL 2 TBSP. LEMON JUICE1 TBSP. FINELY SHREDDED ORANGE PEEL1 CUP (2 STICKS) BUTTER, SOFTENED1 1/4 CUPS SUGAR4 EGGS1 RECIPE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING (BELOW)4 CUPS CHOW MEIN NOODLES1/2 CUP SPECKLED JELLY BEANS*1 RECIPE BLUEBIRD SHORTBREADS (OPTIONAL)
Line twenty-eight 21/2-inch muffin cups with paper bake cups; set aside. In a medium bowl stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In a small bowl combine sour cream, milk, orange-juice concentrate, lemon peel and juice, and orange peel; set aside. In a very large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar; beat about 3 minutes or until light and fluffy, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. (AND EATING THE BATTER!!)
Beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Alternately add flour mixture and sour-cream mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling cups 3/4 full. (LICK THE BOWL AND SPOONS NOW)
Bake in a 350° oven for 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Transfer cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely.Frost cooled cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting or white frosting.
Top each cupcake with a "nest" of chow mein noodles and about 3 jelly bean "eggs."
If desired, set a Blue Bird Shortbread atop each cupcake behind the nest.
MAKES 28 CUPCAKES.
Per serving: 335 cal., 15 g fat (9 g sat. fat), 64 mg chol., 213 mg sodium, 48 g carbo., 1 g dietary fiber, 4 g protein.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: In a large mixing bowl beat two 3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened; 1/3 cup butter, softened; 11/2 teaspoons vanilla; and if desired, 1/2 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel or orange extract with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in 41/2 cups powdered sugar and enough milk (1 to 2 tablespoons) to make spreading consistency. Keep frosting refrigerated until using and keep cupcakes refrigerated once frosted. IF YOU DON'T EAT THEM ALL IN ONE SITTING.
Makes 22/3 cups.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Easter weekend. It can be busy seeing family or celebrating with friends, but I am trying to not lose track of what we are really celebrating! It is such a spiritually significant weekend--and its not about candy, the Easter Bunny, or cute cupcakes (even though these ARE really cute! :)
I hope it is is a special, family-filled weekend for you.

Owls and babies

Can you get enough of owls? I can't! This is my favorite owl, and he graces several of my designs.

I am working on some new baby announcements, and wanted to share this one with you....more to come, I am sure!

Its that time of year...

I am quite choosy about which shows I do, simply because it takes a lot to time away from my family. So, whenever I do one, they are super fun ones! This one is coming up next Wednesday!
If anyone is in the Dallas area, come and join me and shop! There are so many creative and unique vendors that it makes gift buying a breeze!!

How I know I am the real deal....

In short, its because I can't stop buying, looking, and shopping for paper.

I have too much paper. Too much. Too many 8.5x11, 12x12, solid, stripes, note cards, greeting cards, tissue paper-- all of it. If its made of papyrus, I have it and give it away and still have some left. (except for stickers. I can NEVER have too many stickers. I love them so.)
So, why, today, was I at Hobby Lobby*, shopping for more?

I. Don't. Know.

It struck me when I was in the Party Section and I meandered to a new line they are carrying. They have the cutest little office supply stuff- random stuff like paper weights, letter openers, note pads, journals, etc. What caught my eye first were the file folders. Why does someone need adorable and cute file folders, a husband might wonder. And I am not sure I can give a valid answer. All I know is, they call out to me.

As I tried to figure out why a person that designs cards and has plenty of them is TEMPTED to buy more, I have to chalk it up to Paper Love. That's all it is. I love paper. Excess and all. And that's why I know my Paper Love is here to stay.

Does anyone else have something like this? or am I a freak?

PS- I feel the same way about FONTS. :)

*I would post a link but HL doesn't have online shopping. If you are interested, go to the party section next to tissue paper...or at least, that is where it was in my store! :) It has bright designs, all very trendy and vintage looking.
